Hidden Portals in Earth's Magnetic Field

STARGATES EXIST AND PORTALS, WORMHOLES AND GATEWAYS TO OTHER PLAINS OF EXISTENCE HAVE ALWAYS EXISTED IT IS NOT A BRAND NEW THING IT IS A FOREVER BEEN THERE, OLDER THAN YOUR TOENAILS!

A favorite theme of science fiction is "the portal"--an extraordinary opening in space or time that connects travelers to distant realms. A good portal is a shortcut, a guide, a door into the unknown. If only they actually existed.... It turns out that they do, sort of, and a NASA-funded researcher at the University of Iowa has figured out how to find them. "We call them X-points or electron diffusion regions," explains plasma physicist Jack Scudder of the University of Iowa. "They're places where the magnetic field of Earth connects to the magnetic field of the Sun, creating an uninterrupted path leading from our own planet to the sun's atmosphere 93 million miles away."

Hidden Portals (splash)
A new ScienceCast video explains how hidden portals form--and how we can find them.

Observations by NASA's THEMIS spacecraft and Europe's Cluster probes suggest that these magnetic portals open and close dozens of times each day. They're typically located a few tens of thousands of kilometers from Earth where the geomagnetic field meets the onrushing solar wind. Most portals are small and short-lived; others are yawning, vast, and sustained. Tons of energetic particles can flow through the openings, heating Earth's upper atmosphere, sparking geomagnetic storms, and igniting bright polar auroras. NASA is planning a mission called "MMS," short for Magnetospheric Multiscale Mission, due to launch in 2014, to study the phenomenon. Bristling with energetic particle detectors and magnetic sensors, the four spacecraft of MMS will spread out in Earth's magnetosphere and surround the portals to observe how they work. Just one problem: Finding them. Magnetic portals are invisible, unstable, and elusive. They open and close without warning "and there are no signposts to guide us in," notes Scudder.

Hidden Portals (Polar data, 200px)
omputer models based on data from NASA's Polar spacecraft, circa 1998, provided crucial clues to finding magnetic X-points.

Actually, there are signposts, and Scudder has found them. Portals form via the process of magnetic reconnection. Mingling lines of magnetic force from the sun and Earth criss-cross and join to create the openings. "X-points" are where the criss-cross takes place. The sudden joining of magnetic fields can propel jets of charged particles from the X-point, creating an "electron diffusion region." To learn how to pinpoint these events, Scudder looked at data from a space probe that orbited Earth more than 10 years ago. "In the late 1990s, NASA's Polar spacecraft spent years in Earth's magnetosphere," explains Scudder, "and it encountered many X-points during its mission." Because Polar carried sensors similar to those of MMS, Scudder decided to see how an X-point looked to Polar. "Using Polar data, we have found five simple combinations of magnetic field and energetic particle measurements that tell us when we've come across an X-point or an electron diffusion region. A single spacecraft, properly instrumented, can make these measurements." This means that single member of the MMS constellation using the diagnostics can find a portal and alert other members of the constellation. Mission planners long thought that MMS might have to spend a year or so learning to find portals before it could study them. Scudder's work short cuts the process, allowing MMS to get to work without delay. It's a shortcut worthy of the best portals of fiction, only this time the portals are real. And with the new "signposts" we know how to find them. The work of Scudder and colleagues is described in complete detail in the June 1 issue of the Physical Review Letters.

HUGE 7.2 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AT IRAN-IRAQ BORDER OMG IS EVERYONE OK?

HUGE 7.2 EARTHQUAKE STRIKES AT IRAN-IRAQ BORDER.
It look's like it could be really, really bad right now and this could be one of the biggest of the year so far? Let's hope this is the last one ever on the planet? We know there will be more but let's hope not, eh?

A MASSIVE 7.2-magnitude earthquake has been recorded southeast of the city of Sulaymaniyah in Iraq.

HUGE EARTHQUAKE ROCKS THE MIDDLE EAST.

The powerful tremor struck near the border with Iran late Sunday. The epicentre of the quake was located some 34 km below the surface, according to the USGS. Some social media users in Israel, Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have also reported feeling tremors. Details on any casualties or damage remain unknown at this point.

MASSIVE US FLEET HAS ARRIVED FOR DRILL CLOSE TO NORTH KOREA - PICTURES, VIDEOS & MORE

SEOUL - Three U.S. aircraft carriers joined an ongoing exercise with the South Korean Navy in the East Sea on Sunday in an unprecedented show of force against a provocative North Korea.

THE 'GAMES' ARE ABOUT TO BEGIN

The three flattops -- USS Ronald Reagan, USS Nimitz and USS Theodore Roosevelt -- entered the operational area, called the Korea Theater of Operations (KTO), for the four-day maneuvers slated to end Tuesday.
The USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) strike groups transit international waters in the Western Pacific with ships from the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, Nov. 12, as part of a three-carrier strike force exercise.

Guy's this is frickin weird and going to get a bit hairy, like hairy or Sasquach hairy? Maybe even Yeti hairy? Not as hairy as the hairy bikers guide to cooking (them Bristol chefs) but still the U.S doesn't take no shabite from DPRK or that Little Fat and Small Person I quoted Donald Trump there?

THREE OF THE US MOST POWERFUL NAVY STRIKE GROUPS ARRIVED NEAR NORTH KOREA.

NOW JAPAN SENDS WARSHIPS TO JOIN THE US FLEET NEAR NORTH KOREA, MILITARY SOURCE.

The United States naval fleet sent out to attack Kim Jong Un's forces is now joined with Japanese warships as well.

JAPAN ALLIES WITH THE UNITED STATES IN THE BATTLE AGAINST KIM JONG UN.

Recently, North Korea has been striking terror globally and stirring up conflicts with other nations due to their nuclear weapons program. Kim Jong Un, the ruler of North Korea, has also threatened to take his nuclear program to the next level and bomb many of the neighboring countries as well as the United States. As a result of fear of North Korea's development of ICBMs, or Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles, Donald Trump, the president of the United States, sent a naval fleet to the Korean peninsula. North Korea's nuclear program has been developing and producing new weapons that could lead to a devastating nuclear war.

According to the British Broadcasting Channel, "North Korea has conducted several tests with nuclear bombs." While North Korea has been increasing the power and damage of their bombs, it is yet to be verified if the bombs have been "miniaturised" to fit onto a smaller missile. Another key factor is the type of bombs that North Korea is producing.

In their tests in 2006, 2009, and 2013, they used an atomic bomb, which released energy through nuclear fission, the splitting of atoms. However, in January 2016, a hydrogen bomb was used, which is debated to release more energy than an atomic bomb through nuclear fusion, the combination of atoms. In general, North Korea has developed powerful bombs, but it is unsure if they can launch them on smaller missiles yet.

Japanese warships have now also joined the United States fleet to tackle the efforts to develop a stronger bomb in North Korea. Former foreign minister of South Korea, Han Sung Joo, also made claims that North Korea could have an ICBM ready to launch at the United States by the end of Donald Trump's first term in office. Since American and Japanese forces started advancing on North Korea, Kim Jong Un continually threatened to nuke the United States. North Korea has also tested out Scud missiles to ready their ICBM.

Kim Jong Un also stated that their next nuclear test is coming soon, and it could even run on the 105th birthday of North Korea's founding president. Even China has threatened to bomb North Korea if they crossed their "bottom line," which is their security and stability. If North Korea continues with the development of their nuclear weapons, other countries will get involved as well. Although no aggressive actions have been taken yet, there is a continued development of North Korea's nuclear program and a growing anger towards North Korea from other countries. All in all, many conflicts have only been growing bigger as tensions continue to build.
